Marion is an abstract painter, taking inspiration from the contemporary urban environment. She is particularly interested in the distinctive aesthetic of post war Brutalist buildings and has spent the last few years developing this theme in her work. She begins with drawings and collage on paper, to explore form and composition. Some of these stand in their own right - others evolve into paintings where she prefers to work in oil or acrylic on linen.
‘A Brutalist building is rarely purely functional, utilitarian and grey. There are elements of colour, perhaps terracotta, blue or cream, with a variety of materials beyond the familiar concrete, including wood and copper, many different textures and the odd decorative feature. I try to draw on all of this. My aim is to produce images which have a pared down simplicity, but also have depth and weight, echoing the aesthetic of the architecture which inspires me.’
