Overwhelmed by the intensity of the Arizona light and the depth of colour it brought, Martin Grogan focussed on almost meaningless, otherwise neglected subjects and elevated them to a kind of stardom in their own right.
Most of us, when we observe the world around us, only view the wider picture, but Grogan somehow manages to see something else. In other words he sees the tree, not just the woods.
'So much detail is omitted as we are bombarded with visual information from all angles. By concentrating on specific areas, I find I can uncover a whole new world of texture, light, form and most importantly, colour. Colour dominates these images allowing it to become the subject.
I shoot exactly what I see, refusing to manipulate them digitally or be influenced by any preconceived aesthetic notion I might be carrying.'
Following his work from the Arizona borderlands eventually resulted in a solo exhibition held in New York.
