Closer Observations is a series of microscopic images taken mainly of geological samples and minerals. Most are taken so close to the object, they make it unrecognisable, and through this abstraction, a whole new world unfolds.
The results are visually abstract. It reveals the artistic beauty which can be discovered within very ordinary items too small to see with the naked eye, revealing a world of coloured shapes and intricate patterns. This exploration is a reminder that even the minutest objects hold a fascinating, natural beauty.
Each conjures a mental image of what they could be, from stained glass to drawing, aerial views to deep space and planetary surfaces. The list is endless.
‘From my perspective within these patterns and shapes I experience pareidolia, the visual interpretation of what one sees within them attaching meaning where there is none, in the same way as viewers may perceive many different things.’
